from the standpoint of the entire spectrum of actually playing the guitar, i am ok. But from what i'm going to do in my musical career, i'd say i'm probably good, not great, but i do have good technique, a good ear, and a pretty good knowledge of music theory. so i guess i'd rate myself ok for the whole of guitar playing, but for me i'm good.

I don't know if anyone on this forum is 'insane'. I know there are some very talented musicians on this forum, Robotboy, thereal7, ZampraZ. but I dunno if you would consider them 'insane'. Who I would consider insane would be people like Dave Mustaine, Chuck Schuldiner, Al Di Meola, Raffy(that one is a joke...), Steve Howe. Because they are incredibly creative songwriters and incredibly talented and technically profficient guitarists. I am not particularly either of those :P

No, I don't think so. I'd be concerned that we might offend, or discourage someone.

It can be a real challenge to diplomatically discuss an artist's performance with an eye toward improving, or maximizing, it.

Well thats a hard question because, how do you define insane? Do you define insane based by pro players like vai? Or do you define insane judging by their technique for how long they played, do you judge from less standards then sai vai? God im obsessed with vai, anyway. Im not insane, because in my view Vai is insane. I would say im insane for being me, and I don't mean like ooh its the beauty on the inside crap, but I reckon im very good playing and i suffer from severe vanity for a reason :P Robot boy is awesome!

Truthfully, I'm in between good and great. I need to learn more scales though, and how to apply it to various backings. Sweep picking does not come to me as that amazing anymore. Although I can't do it myself, I've seen people do it, and it gets to a point where it's just silly. I look for the things that are purely imaginative, innovative and genius.

Slight Return
January 7th, 2007, 06:28 AM
I'm okay. I think I have a pretty good vibrato, I have a decent basic handle on soloing, my fingerpicking technique has gotten a lot better (although my actual fingerpicking abilities are questionable), but my fretting technique is deplorable. I don't know that many chords, and I basically have A LOT to work on.

I'd consider myself great if I had composed a good amount of coherent material, had a very good handle on soloing, knew a LOT about theory, had excellent technique, and - most importantly - could play a myriad of original songs or jam for hours without being repetitive. The monotony in my playing is perhaps my most significant flaw, and it's going to take a long time to correct.

I also have a bad habit of comparing myself to professional musicians, namely Jimi Hendrix and Leo Kottke. As long as I keep doing that, I will (comparably) suck for a loooooooooooooooooooong time. Gotta get over that.

Marginal but hooked- i had to learn stairway to heaven on guitar when I was in boarding school when I was 14 or 15, and rhythm to id love to change the world- since then can't stay away even if i suck so have gottem a little better over last 32,33 years but really not as good as some guys after just a few - some of us got it ,some of us dont but i am still getting better and playing has been a good companion though all these years- out on the road havent eaten for 2 days or bathed for a week all sick and hungover and looking for a dry palce to sleep and I caught myself thinking, i wish i had a guitar to play ha! I went with good but I'm probably closer to ok. What I'm good at, I'm actually really good at and can play it live (and have). But there is still tons I have to know about guitar, but I have been playing for 1 and a half years and know some modes, major/min scales (obsviously if i know modes), all pentatonics for lead, and some chord harmony, a lot of chords all over the neck, and I can play them in key of a song. I'd say my creativity is ok but improving with more I learn on guitar. So I guess that makes me OK actually.

People often tell me that I am EXTREMELY modest.
I am OBVIOUSLY a sex guitar god, and I reserve the right to say so as often as I want.

Sometimes when I bored I e-mail letters to Vai telling him how awesome I am.
When I was in the womb I began to simulate sweep picking AT THE SAME TIME I was writing concerto's.

i guess i'm good. people tell me i'm good/great, but i dont think so. i have good technique, in the sense that i can make my fingers move where i want them to, and perform accurately, quickly, and efficiently, but where I fall short is actually translating that technique to music. I have the ability to create music in a technical sense, but not in a musical sense (if that makes any sense :D ) but i'm working on it! and I still have a LOOOONG way to go technique-wise also. I'll work my whole life trying to master it, knowing its impossible to master it all... but if i can be really good to my own ears, i will be happy.

I like to play, and I'm probably right around ok. It's all subjective though. I heard it put this way once, " You're only as good as your last live show"... which makes sense to me. At our last one a guy dropped a $100 bill on our table for us halfway through the first set.

Oh I'm definitely insane....but I'm not sure if that was meant to be a good or bad thing on the poll....

As far as guitaring goes....sure I can shred people into amazement and do lots of mushy stuff and think pieces....but I still see myself as WAY down there on the ability level, compared to whats possible if I actually wasn't too lazy to put the work in. It always bothers me to see guys like Tommy Emmanuel play because it makes me think that if I wouldn't have been so lazy in the past years, I could be at that level.....a very frustrating thought.
