View Full Version : Lesson 2-3 (Can I put tape on my guitar to label that C string?

I have put tape on my guitar to list that C note on all 6 strings before and after the 12th fret from Lesson 2, but my question is:
1: Would you recommend this? Or should I remove the tape?
2: I finished lesson 2 & have moved to lesson 3, but my question here is while I have taped the guitar frets associated with C it seems a bit to easy to map the strings. I don't know if I should map the strings by writing them down or what? Gets confusing & I forget where the root of C is too. What do you think? Any tips you might have would be great!

Hey!!!
That is exactly what I did http://www.zentao.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Does anybody remember the Roy Clark Big Note Song Book? On second thought, does anybody remember Roy Clark?
Anyway... he had these stick-em' dots that went with the book. You were suposed to put them on the fingerboard to help you see where to put your fingers when learning the chords. I used to watch Hee Haw when I was a kid (please don't tell anyone http://www.zentao.com/ubb/redface.gif ) ...Roy Clark was a monster on the guitar, so I figured that was the book to get if you wanted to play like Roy Clark.
It didn't quite work out that way, but years later I was trying to learn some scales and was having that same trouble. It was hard to see the pattern. So I dug out those stick-em dots and put them on the guitar neck. It worked! In fact, I would say that was the thing that caused my own breakthrough. After a while, the dots fell off, but I could still see the scale.
I always thought it would be funny to see one of these guitar wizards on MTV absolutely tearing up the fingerboard... and then the camera moves in close and you see that he has these Roy Clark stick-em dots showing him where to go http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smile.gif
Your idea to write down the scales is also A+. Go here (http://www.zentao.com/guitar/theory/neck-diagrams.html) and print out the page a few hundred times. That ought to hold you over for a while.

Ok I printed out 3 pages!
Should I use my guitar while im writing down the scale of "C" on these new printed pages or can I do it while im at work (I'm @ work now)?
My left leg is sore. I switched from the right leg to my left. The reason was so that when I stand it will be similar to practice instead of being awkward! (Your Good Advice Of course!)
I'm having minor difficulty with alternate picking as well, but should I catch on anyway just by following along if I keep a conscientious check on it?

Well... three isn't exactly a few hundred, but you'll be back for more... I guarantee it http://www.zentao.com/ubb/wink.gif
Use those diagrams both when you have your guitar and when you don't. They're good for plotting out everything. That can really help to get patterns and shapes to stick in your mind.
I had a student once who used to write this stuff down on flash cards and carry the cards in his shirt pocket. Whenever he had a free moment he would pull out one of the cards and force himself to name the scale or chord or whatever was on the card. You do whatever you have to http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smile.gif
As to alternate picking... just be conscientious... that is the secret to it all.

Ok 15 More! http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smile.gif
I'm gonna try to get through lesson 3 when I get home from work! I think I need to slow down though. I keep finding myself getting overly enthusiastic to move onto the next lesson before I feel I have learned to previous lesson to perfection. It's 12:54AM ES I work till 2:30AM ES.
Just for kicks I'll tell you what im working with. I have a 1990 (Metallic Blue) Ibanez Saber.
I have had it for years, but never learned to play real well as you read in one my previous postings http://www.zentao.com/ubb/frown.gif
Now I'm really serious about it, and excited to spend all my spare time practicing. I can't really go out much because of how severe my Hypoglycemia currently is, so I spend a great deal of time resting at home physically, and this really gives me time to learn & practice.
I also have an SVT Lightning, which I bought this year, but don't have the funds to really do all the modifications I would like, so this is my free hobby. I thank you so much for this gift man!

alternative picking is a funny thing....I was...not long ago...where you are at having problems with it....anyway, the funny thing is when alternate picking becomes the norm and you are used to picking fast...it is HARD...DAMN HARD to force yourself to pick in one direction...
Just food for thought..

Just think... BB King started out on a guitar he made out of a cigar box with bailing wire for strings. That ought to keep anybody from thinking they don't have the best equipment http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smile.gif
MB... you have to figure out your own pace, 'cause I'm not there to beat you over the head with my guitar if you don't have the lessons down http://www.zentao.com/ubb/mad.gif
The first couple of lessons are pretty basic... more for people who have never even seen a guitar in their life. You will probably find lesson 3 more challenging. But don't be in too big a hurry to get to the next lesson... you will just end up having to back-track if you miss something or don't spend enough time to really get the previous lesson iced.
--->For anybody and everybody who is going through the lessons<---
Before moving on to a new lesson, go back and review each prior lesson. Make sure that you have each section down. The further you get in the lessons, the more you are expected to know what you learned in the previous lessons.... my way of making sure that you turn out to be a monster player http://www.zentao.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi StoneDragon,
Found your site tonight from a link from cnet. Its 1.50am Friday 18.2.00. Sydney Australia. This site is Just Great,
I'll be backabout 10am.
I am sure I'll be using sticky dots too!
Is there a similar site for learning Bass?
My daughter Leesh is keen to get started on
Bass, but her budget doesn't allow for lessons at present.
Hope I'll be busking for the Olympics!
Thanks, Victoria.

Victoria...
I am curious as well, what does busking mean?
Stonedragon does not have any Bass guitar lessons put together that I know of, and I have known him for quite some time now. Glad to have you join us!!!!
