I have been wanting to buy a guitar in horrible condition, and totally re-finish it for a while now.
I have always wanted a les paul, but I can't make myself like the neck on one.
I want to buy a LP shaped copy, something decent but dinged up, and buy a neck off something based on a strat neck approach. I know an actual strat neck would look too crazy on an LP, so I'll look around.
Would I be able to mount the neck to the body (obviously with a bit of re-shaping of the body and neck). Would all the notes be in the same place ect?
I'd probably put a different bridge on it if the strings wouldnt line up properly on the fretboard.
But do you think this could be possible? I'm up for a challenge.

Idk, i think all notes should be normal, but if theyre not, you might have to tune them up or down a little. I think its awesome that youre trying this though, i think i might have to too!

Yeah I really do love LP's, But I dont have the cash to pay for an actual Gibson.
All copies I have played feel plastic to me, and the fret spacing is quite noticible.
I'm not sure what I will take a neck from, I will try and get something which is 3 tuners each side on the head.
Once I get the project moving I will start post some pictures.
I think it could end out being quite cool! And if I can get it playable and sounding sweet, I will dish out the cash for some nice pickups.

Well, to put a strat style neck on an LP body wouldn't work without moving the bridge.
That said, if you found a gibson scale length neck, you could bolt that on and go- in that the bridge is already postioned for that scale length.
Now, are you looking to bolt a neck on, or do a full on 'set neck'?

if you're already planning on refinishing it, why not sand down the backside of the neck to make it thinner, instead of getting a new neck altogether?

I have an Epi LP spII that has a sanded down neck, you could sand it more to makit thinner aswell. It has all the parts bar the pups and elecronics.

yeah,if you put a different length neck on a guitar body, the frets will be in a wrong position and you will have to move the pickup to the right place for the correct scale length to get the frets to sound out right,i think.that could be annoying and might end up getting in the way of you p'ups and electronics.just altered an lp sized neck i say

Besides the scale, fender necks are in line with body but LP's are angled. You should be able to fit it sculpting a pocket for the bolt-on strat neck, but take your mesurements before you remove the original neck to have the right angle.
