I am searching for a first guitar and any advice appreciated. I've seen an Ibanez GIO and a vantage vs600 in a pawn shop for less than 200$ each. I am not crazy about buying from a pawn shop but sometimes the music stores intimidate the hell out of me as I am just a beginner. I really like the look of the vantage and was thinking of picking it up and then when I am a little more comfortable buying new from a proper instrument dealer. I've always loved les pauls, sg's, strats and such but I don't think I can afford the gibsons or fenders but I have seen a lot of epiphones in the stores I have gone into. For starters I mostly want to play through my computer and headphones ( so I don't annoy anyone) and then buying a decent amp later. I'm 40 so I am not interested in starting a band it is just for my personal enjoyment. One concern (of many) I have small hands. I hope that doesn't sound stupid but I worry that some necks will be too fat.
Musical tastes run hard rock to some folk country. Zappa, Beck, Vai, Stones, Zeppelin,
steve earle, charlie sexton etc
Sorry if I am running on here I've never posted on one these. Any advice appreciated.

Welcome to the forums ZappaFan! Another Zappa/Zeppelin/Vai fan...you'll fit in great around here :)
I'm not sure how much of a quality guitar but I know the Strats have a Squire version made for beginers. There cheap, I think I got mine for 70 bucks off a friend when I first started out. He said he bought it for around 100 something. Same look as the cool strats just not the great quality. For beginers...I know it worked out for me perfect. Unless you wana go acoustic guitar.
Also...Don't worry about typing a lot or rambling in a post man. Don't feel held back to post. Post away!
Hope you enjoy it around here, see ya around the boards!

I hope this is right place to introduce. :) This forum seems very cool. The samples show me the amazing talent. Thanks for this forum. :)
I am mostly acoustic, but if this is mostly electric, that's ok, i want to learn more lead stuff with my Les Paul Standard, 1984.
ABOUT ME
My skill level on electric is chords and some basic lead stuff - i am not a guitar beginner. I really play acoustic. Level? I don't suck on bluegrass. I taught myself 5-string banjo in 15 minutes - meaning i had that picking style down already. In the 60's i memorized all of George Harrison's solos (not Nuno, but...). I hope my fingers have some memory to do more lead. :) ?
I loved Les Paul, and SRV, Hendrix, i dig Nuno Bettencourt, too many i am forgetting. I am recording my original songs now - just folky stuff. I sing. I have many acoustics.
Thanks, hello, and i will help the weaker and receive help from the stronger. :)

Hey Alva, welcome to the forum! This is a great place to learn about guitar and music, and it's a safe laid back forum to learn on. I saw your first post. To start a thread of your own, go to the top of the page where it says "Forum Tools" right under where the page totals are. click on that and then click on "Post a new thread". That will get you started.
Enjoy the forum!
