1. Talent
2. Commitment
3. Really nice hair
(3's optional, and if you want to get get into today's pop scene, 1 is optional too.)

but seriously folks.....
Unless you plan on doing a solo gig like these singer songwriter types or these band-in-a-box types that you see once in a while, put a band together or join a band that is already together and needs a guitar player.
Get enough songs down (your own or cover tunes or both) that you can play for about four hours without repeating any songs. Then, get out and play some parties or hit the local bars that feature live bands and find out how they go about hiring bands. I've played everything from weddings to 4th of July fireworks displays to swimming pool parties to week long gigs in the bars. It doesn't matter what the gig is.
I've always held the philosophy that I would play in back of somebody's outhouse as long as there were people there that wanted to hear some music. If there wasn't a paying gig happening, my friends and I would set up in the city park and just start playing.

hmmmm... 4 hours of songs without repeating. i got a ways to go. maybe if each band member had a 10 minute solo for every song i could pull it off.

It's easy to get into the music scene, but difficult to get out. Prepare yourself cautiously young Skywalker.http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/stealth.gif

Dedication is the key, it could be a long time coming before you are noticed, but if you stick to it pretty soon before you know it you'll have dedicated fans, and club owners just itchin' to make money off of you. Then the club owner will tell you he didn't make enough money and try to pay your band in quarter rolls, even if it was a packed house.
Just speaking from experience! LOL

That's the truth.
My favorite is when you pack the house, and everybody is rockin' and having the time of there lives.... then the bar manager pulls the old "you guys were too loud, and everybody was complaining, so we are only going to pay you half..."

And even worse yet, from the 1/2 of the money your now getting paid for being too loud, 3/4 of that money was put towards the bands beer tab!!!
