Ever talk about or even pop-in a CD to your friends, girlfriend(s) and/or acquaintances about your guitar heroes like Satriani, Vai, Gary Hoey, Jason Becker, Vinnie Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen and etc. And they don't know who the hell you are talking about or when they hear the CD you are playing and all they mention is, "Well, when does the singer come in?".

Well anyway,

At long last and hopefully, I will be daring to perform some instrumental music at my units club, rather than play the jukebox and radio friendly stuff that most everyone has already heard before.

My ultimate take is:

It is about time that instrumental guitar players' music get some exposure. I like that kind of music. Some tunes you can still dance too. And it isn't the same monotonous stuff(well, to me and the other guys who I will be playing with) you hear on the clubs Jukebox over and over.

But what about the people that I will be serving to?:

However, I kind of fear it maybe something simular to performing originals, where very few of the audience can not relate to. And on top of that the music with no human voice in the melodies....

My mind is whispering "No, only play what the people want(expect) to hear." and my heart is saying "Go play the music that you adore and besides it's still rock n' roll anyway".

Either, I can be inconsiderate and perform stuff that I think people should get exposure to while satisfying my own ego, or I can give in and continue to take the road most traveled on.

No, I am not getting paid for this one gig. I will be playing(as well as other performers for that night) at the club on the base to boost the clubs appeal as well as its publicity.

Depending on how many tunes you will get to play, you could mix it up. Throw in some good old classics that people always love to hear and throw in some of the stuff you really want to play.

Everybody wins!

Update:

The show at the club along with the instrumentals went very well. People actually liked the music (maybe because they were drunk?). But, after the show it did lead to a few more gigs and then some.

Some of the tunes end up playing were Joe Satriani's, Crush of Love, and 2 originals.

Yes, offers for more paying gigs.

However, I will be going underway soon. So probally when I get back. The good thing is, that everyone in the band is on the ship also(so we will be jamming and playing on the ship.)

You should consider the audience when making up your set list. Keep 'em singing and dancing (happy) or the venue may not ask you back. Just from experince...throw in a few jammers but don't forget the dancers too...

Vike-

I'm glad it worked out. If nothing else, you probably impressed some people enough to get more conventional musical opportunities, if that's what you want.

Cool man, I've been to that club. Holds big crowds! A bunch of rockin' beer guzzlers (at least in the '80s). I was in 'Section 8" aboard the La Salle (AGF-3). We played rock, blues, and country for the crew at 'Smokers', and an elevator set for the officers at 'Under the Awning' functions.

I did time mostly on gator freighters, what ship ya on?

Oh yeah, in response to your question, I recommend starting out with something you're sure they'll like. Then go to the stuff you like. If your stuff is a hit, stick with it. If not, go back to the familiar.
