What was the best or last show you guys played? I'm sure we all have been there, up on stage, communicating with the audience, with that indescribable feeling that sometimes isnt even worth analyzing, just worth enjoying. Overall nothing can duplicate the sheer feeling of power that we recieve through our amp, (well almost nothing .)
The last great show that I can remember was back in highschool, my band at the time has never been more motivated that night, and we played great. We communicated great with the audience, it wasnt enough that they were juswt watching the show, they were merely part of the show, (and there was no booze to be found), they liked us and enjoyed the music for all that it was worth. And we had a great drummer, he really carried the show, we played mostly originals, (and I was very surprised by the reception.) We played a few Zeppelin, and Aerosmith covers, I basically took care of part of the guitar parts, and our singer (whom was female blew everyone away.) It was a great show, but unfortunately the band wasn't permanent, my friend shelly (the vocalist) went off to college, an the rest of the guys just kind of lost interest, and what about tht drummer, he broke his hand during a freak accident a few months later. Basically what started off as a great experience ending with a halt, call it karma call it whatever you like, but time just wasn't on my side the rest of that year.

The last gig I played was last saturday night. It was a bust. The band had too much to drink and was not tight. On the other hand, we did a show a few weeks ago, and didn't even have a full set of drums, and it was a gas. It was a small place, and there was not a huge crowd (although it was steady all night) but the band was just hot that night. It just kind of happens that way sometimes.

My last time on stage was last Thursday. It was good, only for certain moments. During one of the sets a guy that was fairly new was playin' drums, and one of the harp players (there were three on stage) turned to me and said, "the drummer isn't keeping a steady beat". I told him that the drummer, the bass player, and the other guitar player were all off-beat to one another. He listened for a sec, then said, "yeah, you're right". I just did the ol' 12 bar rhythm trying to average it out. uhg, sometimes it goes well, and sometimes it don't. I've noticed that it usually goes better when there are a lot of people there.

One experience I have had that is exasperating is to have a back wall far away from the stage. Often if you are in front of the drums and far enough away from them, you hear the reflection off of the back wall ( the one you are facing), and that makes the timing off. That is just one more reason for always at least micing the kick drum if nothing else, that way the bass player plays to the kick coming from the monitors, and does not notice room reflections.
I feel for drummers, often they need a louder monitor mix than everyone else, and many times whoever is fronting doesn't like the monitors as loud as the drummer does.
Also, I think I found the solution to an age old problem in project studios, headphones that are isolating enough so the drummer is not hearing the drums too loud. I take cheap headphones, the small kind ( I got some at a local el cheapo store for a couple of bucks) and take the ear part off of the headpiece. I get gun shooters noise protection, and put the small headphone dirvers into the earcups. The cushions usually snap off of the ear protection easily, and you can cut small slots in the ear cup at the bottom on each side to accomodate the headphone cord. So far it seems to work pretty well for me when I am recording drums by myself. I can hear the music much better, it helps my timeing a lot.

Well, it's Thursday night again. Just got back from the jam. I met a bass player and (believe it or not) a drummer, that are interested in getting together. I know a singer, and guitar players are a dime a dozen around here. Who knows, maybe we'll have it together by the time Spring comes around. I would so much rather do a set that's rehearsed than trying to perform 'on the fly'. Oooooh, Etta James just came on my player - gotta dig it. :)

Guitar players are a dime a dozen everywhere. I bet if you found a small tribe of undiscovered pigmys in a tropical rain forest, and at least 3 of them would be strumming on tarzan rope strands tied to a hollow stick. They would all be under a tree somewhere discussing which tarzan strands are best and which trees provide the best hollow sticks, and which one plays the right notes to "Stairway to Heaven".
