As a member of Hypnotic Tramp with FUNKGRAVY, we've played on a flatbed at a Bikers reunion(fun, and entertaining), a lounge for a college freshman orientation(hands down, the worst gig ever), and a jr. high school dance where kids were actually playing tag on the dancefloor.

At the bikers reunion we watched "Biker Olympics" consisting of games such as navigating a course while your old lady pours a steady stream of water over your head, and the mustard/ketchup covered hot dog grab which the biker chicks had to bite off of lines suspended from clotheslines. http://www.zentao.com/ubb/tongue.gif
All in all, that was a pretty fun gig, but I did not want to look at any biker chiks for too long and get pounded by their old man!

At the freshman orientation, I don't think that those kids knew why they were even there. No alcohol, food, or anything. Just us playing in an empty cafeteria and a bunch of freshmen with the looks on their faces like, "can I go back to my room now?"!

What do you guys have?

There was one gig that sticks in my memory, because it was really weird.

The band I was in was hired to play the high school prom in this small little logging/mining town. If you've ever seen the movie Dante's Peak, that movie was filmed right near this town that we played.

Anyway... the weird part for me was the fact that they sold tickets to all the local town's people to come watch the prom. But you didn't actually get to come inside the gym where the dance was being held. Instead, whoever decorated the gym had gone to the trouble of creating a wall around the entire gym floor with twisted crepe paper. So the locals had to stand around on the other side of this barrier like a bunch of voyers peeking throught the paper at all the high school kids groping each other on the dance floor.

When they turned the house lights off, all you could see from the stage around the outskirts of the gym floor were these glowing eyeballs reflecting our red stage lights. It was creepy... like finding yourself in the middle of a Stephen King movie http://www.zentao.com/ubb/eek.gif

hey ghodaddyyo do you remember the time we played at Western Maryland college , we were real young then. The women in the crowd kept asking us to take it all off. The funny part was that my parents were there and also my girlfriends parents were too. Needless to say we couldn't disapoint the adearing fans of the female persuasion, only to our underwear though. Hey - they wanted it http://www.zentao.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Our band got invited to "provide entertainment" - exact words of the official letter. Turns out it was a nudist camp having a "swinging party". Needless to say we were the watchers, and after the 5th out-of-tune off-rhythm song we became partakers. They still paid us the whole fee. I suppose nobody noticed the soundman was playing a tape of our practice recordings ...

We played a place with a tatoo place upstairs. Biker bar sorta but small, not run by bikers. One night a short lived band I played with was onstage when a fight broke out. The place is understaffed and mostly little women at the bar, and the 60 year old owner instructed them to spray pepperspray at any brawlers. Two of them dowsed the guys and really oversprayed. Filled the small two room building but I wasn't aware of the silent cloud of spray drifting towards our side of the building.
Only one band member saw it coming but failed to tell anyone till he was about to choke. We sang sing songy type songs with a lot of vocals and we were in the midst of a very vocal song. Well, I noticed the smell but was unfamiliar with it & the effects of it. Suddenly we were looking at each other(the vocalists) unable to sing struggling to breath suddenly. Being professionals, we would normally try to finish the song, but in this situation we had to run outside with the rest of the patrons. The building took 1 hour to clear. We played five more songs, got paid and I never played there since.

Oh man... I was sitting with a friend in a small resaurant beside a lounge. Some old coot got kicked out of the lounge for being a jerk and decided on his way out the door to shoot off some pepper spray into the restaurant where we were sitting.

One moment I'm sitting there, talking, the next moment, I'm wondering why my friend has tears streaming down his face. The next moment, I can't breath and can barely see enough to find my way to the door.

I can't even imagine being in a closed in place with somebody getting doused with that stuff.

there used to be just cover bands around here, then suddenly this whole scene of original bands started up. every bar we played in ended up shutting down very shortly afterwards. they were all dives! now we're back to all cover bands again http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/frown.gif
