Whats so great about a band whose only talent is to apply makeup in a dodgy manner?

Depends on how old you are. Any guy who is between the ages of about 40 to 45 right now is a liar if he says he didn't want to be Ace Frehley when he was a kid.

Not really, depends on the person, were they live/have lived and what type of music their mates and family enjoy too.

The entire lineup of KISS isn't fit to wipe Joe's butt far as I'm concerned. He's a better player AND singer, and song writer than that whole band put together. Peter Criss is a competent solid drummer, that's about all I can say good about them.

One question though- when Perry played with them was it Aerosmith or KISS songs they played? I'd be horrified to hear Gene Simmons try to match Tom Hamilton's bass chops- but hearing a KISS song or two with a decent solo might be amusing for a change.

I'm not trying to bad-mouth KISS, but they're really just a gimmick joke band. Aerosmith have done their fair share of chasing an image too, I won't deny, but they could play KISS under the table even if each cutt off several fingers on their fretting hands.

Joe Perry [edited] I hate aerosmith. Kiss is better than them any day. No one and I mean NO ONE puts on a better show than Kiss. I just wish Ace would come back.

Let's keep in mind that some guys are much better musicians than what they choose to "sell as a product" would let on.

I'll agree that Joe Perry outclasses them in the musicianship department, but Paul Stanley is no slouch.

I always thought kiss was too much about image rather then musical expression.

I heard that Ace wanted to be more creative when playing live but the band wanted to play everything just like the recordings.

Oh well, whatever sells more figurines and lunch boxes.

I loved Ace's first solo album!

Thier fist couple of albums were ok. Kiss always reminded me of 4th of July fireworks. You know its going to be loud and go boom! Not much substance though...Certainly not for "artistic types" either.

Yeah they were alot of flash but damn their concerts are alot of fun you feel like the whole crowd is a big family your apart of. I've seen lots of concerts but their's is just so damn impressive. To hear them studio then see them live is so much different. I love their music, and combined with their show you can't beat it. Nowadays you don't have band's that put that much out there for the fans. Most shows are boring nowadays. If you want a glimpse of their show look at the inside cover of ALIVE II no one has been able to top them.

Yeah, but the entire point with KISS was to have fun, and the costumes made it fun. It was just a good time, really

Did anyone see the show "Rock School" with Gene Simons?

Basicly he was supposed to go to this school and teach some young kids how to play in a rock band.
The thing was, he didn't teach them anything about how to play the instruments! He just had them thump on one note, and told them how to pose, make faces, and have the "rock attitude". Even the kids were dissapointed.

No doubt kiss were great performers, and masters of theatrics, but I have a hard time taking them seriously as musicians. (No offense to the kiss army)

I'll second that.

I'm not saying they're not great showmen. Their theatrics set the mark for all of rock and roll. However I think Alice Cooper OR Ozzy Osbourne rival them where that is concerned- but they also started first, AND whatever they may lack in theatrics, they more than make up for with better music IMO.

I'm not trying to flame you Metalmachine- but have you ever seen an Aerosmith concert? I'm not so sure you'd be touting KISS's superiority if you had. Aerosmith is generally regarded as one of the best live rock bands around. Really. Ask around I think you'll find a lot of the JS members who have a couple decades of concert-going under thier belts would agree with me on this. I haven't liked a studio album of theirs since "Nine Lives" (with the exception of 'Bobo') but I would go see them live in a heartbeat, cause they're incredible in front of a crowd to this day.
