What is better for home recording? From what I hear macs are better but they are really bad to upgrade. And what would be better for using Pro-Tools.

Mac have had an advantage in the past, but that advantage has dwindled and to some extent may have been reversed. There use to be more good music oriented software and hardware for the Mac, but I believe PCs have the advantage now. One advantage the Mac does have is that it is a more stable system than a Windows based system. The big reason is that apples OS doesn't use shared files as in Windows. PC's make fine music platforms, though, and you can probably get more for your buck with the PC platform.

If you want to go Pro Tools, then Mac is the only real option. They tried to put together a Pro Tools for PC, but it blows big time. (unless they have seriously reworked it... which I seriously doubt)
I had the PC Pro Tools on my comp for about 10 minutes before I was uninstalling it. Crash city!!! Similar reports were pouring in on the Audio Forums message board.
My personal opinion is that they were trying to develop a PC version, got so far with it before realizing that it really wasn't going to work, then decided to give it away for free.

Hey folks, this is my first post.
I'm running Protools on a Mac, and let me
tell you in the year that I've had it it's crashed maybe twice. I've NEVER had the OS crash...in fact the only thing that ever crashes is IE.
The Mac OS is much simpler and user friendly than Windows, things that take you six steps to do in Window take three with Mac OS.
There are effects plug-in available for Macs running Pro-Tools.
..But I was reading at the digidesign forum that windows users are getting more instances of plug-ins than Mac users.
One of the things about digidesign is that
they are slow going, it may seem that they aren't keeping up with the competition, but it seems to me that they want to make sure their stuff is definately going to work before they release anything new.
If you're thinking of ProTools go to digidesign.com and make sure you check out the compatibility documents for the Pro tools system you're interested in.
Think about other apps you want to run. do you want to run Photoshop? Illustrator? Definate permance increases with these on Mac. Do you want to play games? I don't reccomend playing any sort of games on you're audio computer.
Really you need to do ALOT of research before you buy.

That is the honest truth.

I have a mac and i'm also running protools on it. It works great and i love it i've never had a problem with it once. I think mac in general are just better operating systems, sure PC's can be cheaper and you can get some good music programs for them, but i think that your first choice should be mac.
CAN I GET A AMEN!!

The differences now are very few. In fact, it has been shown that Pro Tools runs better on some Pentium 4s then it does on an equivalent Mac. Macs are too overpriced for what you get. And they absolutely do have problems and crash; and when they crash, it's a helluvalotworse than on a PC. There's normally money involved.
With the advent of Windows XP, the lines became very blurry.
The best advice now is ... if you're more comfortable on a PC, get a PC (+ an extra monitor, max out the RAM, and get a nice SCSI drive) .. if you're more comfortable on a Mac, get a Mac (and nothing else because you won't be able to afford it! http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif)
