As I said in my topic called school just got a little better, I am going able to take an independant study and will hopefully be able to record some stuff. The problem is that the computers don't have any recording software, and they're not that good of computers either.

So I am wondering if I should try to do the computer recording thing, or if I should go with some sort of a standalone unit. I'm on a pretty tight budget-about a couple hundred bucks-and I was wondering what some good options are. Also, we are probably going to need something for drums too, since we don't have a drummer, but I don't know the first thing about that kind of stuff.

Thanks.

You should find a program called Ntrack. Try it, if you like recording to your computer you might want to upgrade to cooleditpro2.
Basically all you need to record well on the computer is a good preamp, and mic and software. You can plug your guitar into your computers mic input directly with an IMP but preamps are much better. Even better is mic'd recording. Meaning, you mic your amp and run the mic into a preamp that goes into the computers soundcard. The better the soundcard, the easier you life will be. go to www.harmony-central.com (http://www.harmony-central.com) and go to the forums, they have a computer recording forum full of tips and tricks.

Personally, I use a 2ghz XP mac with a mia card, art preamp, shure sm57 mic'd from a JC120 running cooleditpro and I'm very happy with my setup.

Then again, you could get a Roland 24/80 standalone unit that will do all the work for you but it's about $1500. If you have a decent computer try ntrack first. you might like it, you might not.
