using your computer might not get the best sound quality, and ya a mixer would be nice but not nesasary.

I'd buy a digital recorder. I have a Boss BR532 and it is not bad at all, and not all that expensive either. One thing to keep in mind: if you are recording live you will need to have either a multitrack recorder that can record all your instruments at the same time, or a mixer to feed several channels into a few channels on your recorder.
Most cassette recorders only record one track at a time, and the sound is lousy compared to digital.

If you get a cassette machine, here is a usefull trick. Get one that records at the same speed as a home deck. Then, adjust the head on the home deck so that it jives with 2 of the tracks on the 4 track. Then, record four tracks, incuding a note at the begininng for tuning reference. Mix the four tracks down to the 2 track machine, then put the 2 track tape back in the 4 track and VIOLA' you have two more tracks to use and save a generation of noise.
