I hear people complain how Bass sounds on digital recorders, especially guys from when rock was happening that want that real heavy make furniture walk bass. The reason rock music had that great bass sound is because analog tape compresses sound when you slam it to tape hard. I do the same thing with digital tape decks, but, you cannot slam onto them to get that natural compression because it will distort horribly.
The solution is to run the bass into a compressor then directly into the deck. I use an old Alesis 1/3 of a rack space comp I bought around 15 years ago. Compress it pretty heavily, Bass does not seem to noticibly "breathe" when compressed like other stuff does. Then, I slam all the tracks through an analog mixer when recording. I get somre pretty authentic rock era sounds.
