Hey I'm totally new to recording guitar onto a computer. I don't know anything about it. I tried plugging my guitar into my sound card using a 1/4->1/8 converter but it sounded bad, and I tried plugging my guitar to my amp and then to my card and it also sounded terrible.

Do I need a better sound card? I just have the basic one that came with the comp. Do I need a mixer? I listened to the samples of the guitar stuff you guys posted and the quality is excellent, how do you do that?

I haven't tried yet myself, but what kind of software ar eyou using? Just the sound recorder on your pc? if so, that's probably why, just a guess. I'm using 4 track tape right now,but I'm looking at getting a USB mixer that plugs in to your pc via USB line. It's just like a 4 or 8 track depending on what one, but it goes right to your pc with to finish mixing and burn. That's one option, you can do it for under $500 I know. If you already have a burner, that means you can start mixing and producing your own cd's/demos for under $500. Of course, that's just one option.

you need some software to run your rig in to the PC.
Here are some to check out: http://www.guitar-fxbox.com/ http://guitarfx.net/
Play around with the settings in both programs..

I recomend to read: http://guitarfx.info - how to use PC for guitar recording and fx-processing.

How to tune your sound card for guitar recording (near the bottom of this page): http://www.geocities.com/guitarfx_2001

I recomend to try this software: http://GuitarFX.Net

Some sound example created on PC
using this software: http://guitarfx.org/sounds/compare_test1.wav (800 KB), compare stompbox "Rocktron MaXe pre-amp" and GuitarFX.Net software.

Screen shot for this software:

This software did not asked money from me!
Enjoy!

I have a question along the same lines. I was just wondering if it is ok to go from my stereo line out on my amp to the line in on my soundcard. I have a crate amp (I don't remember which model) and a audigy 2 platinum soundcard. Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't record through your sound card unless it is *absolutely* the only thing you can do. If you can't afford to buy even the cheapest analog 4 track (I paid $150 for a Tascam Porta 02 MKII, but I've seen them cheaper, but you will need a mic), use CoolEditPro to bring your tracks onto your PC and make MP3s. Otherwise, get a mic that will work for you and record through the mic - play with placement until you get the sound you like.
Hope this helps,

M-Audio Firewire 410 + Amplitube VST plug-in + Cubase. A stripped down version of Cubase comes with the 410. The USB version of the 410 is a bit cheaper. I paid 299$ for my 410. Guitar Center *lists* it for 399$ but if you cry poor they will sell it cheaper . . . actually, they will sell just about *anything* they have cheaper than 'rack rate' if you haggel with 'em.

Also, check out the Digitech GNx3 and GNx4.
