Any recording vets have some advice to give for recording electric guitars? Any preferred methods? Also, how about for really loud amps? I seem to get the most 3d tones out of small amps mic'd with a condensor or a CAD drum mic placed at a 45 degree angle aimed halfway to the middle of the cone. Just looking for more ideas.

I usually record with two dynamic mics. one usually a couple inches away from the speaker, to the right of the speaker. and the other around 10 feet back pointed down at teh amp.
i'm no pro or anything.

Hey,
I played around with this a bit, and got pretty good results with 2 Shure SM57's, one 3 inches from the amp with the mic parallel to the speaker cone angle. pointed at the center of the cone - the other depends on what effects you are using. I usually use distortion and/or chorus, or sometimes wah-wah or delay. Play with the location to figure out what you want. Also, you can add more mics in different locations (I heard someone, might have been Jimmy Page, say he put one up close and one down the hallway to get a deper sound) - play around, it's pretty cool.

That's how some pros do it. You can put one on left channel and the other on right. Makes for some cool depth. Also, dynamic mics are cheaper and more durable than condensor mics. Just blowing (cringe) into a condensor mic can ruin it.

I preffer to get the dryest sound possible when recording. I turn off all delay's and verbs from my effects and gate all the unwanted noise. I use an AKG414 about two feet away from a 4X12 cab. This is for a heavy type distorted sound. For clean sounds I usally just go direct (from my effects pedals) into the mixing console - also with all the verb and delay off.
