Someone showed me how he played "I can only Imagine" by Mercy Me using Emajor and then sliding that same shape up to frets 7 and 9.
I couldn't remember how he did it so I printed off some tab and lyrics online. It says to use Asus2,B,E,E7, and C#msus2. I have no idea what some of these chords are, is that what I am playing with the three chords that he showed me?

Yeah that sounds close.

If you play the regular E major shape with the B and High E strings open and move that exact shape up to the 3rd, 5th and 7th fret etc (While still leaving the High E and B open) You will get a variety of cool sound chords as well as just about every Alice in Chains song.

I think they go like this, but I might be a little off on the exact names.

3rd fret it would be a G6
5th Asus2
7th Bsus4
8th Cmaj7 (maybe?)

What order would you play the cords in and when would you change?

That depends on what song I was playing.

They can be played in any order and be changed at any time.

You know the chorus to "Heaven Beside You"
by Alice in Chains?

Play that chord shape with the B and High E open, and go from
A, G, C, to B.

A..........G..................C
Like the coldest winter Chill
.............B.....................A
Heaven beside you, Hell within

Something like that.
