It is a type of nut / fruit that the Italians are quite partial too - or is that a caper???

Sorry, It is a clamp put around the guitar neck to alter the tuning.

Specifically, to elaborate just a bit, it's a clamp that you put across any fret of the neck that acts as an automatic barre, so you can play open chords anywhere on the neck, and consequently in different keys other than just the keys the actual open position affords. They are used a great deal in folk music, but you can see them pop up in blues playing as well.

Here's a particularly effective one you might think of getting if you want one to tool around with:

I don't care how pretty the chicks are, I'm never playing anything by John Mayer. Ugh, makes me sick thinking about his songs...

Hmm, John Mayer. I never really was a fan, but a couple weeks ago I saw him on Austin City Limits. He played a couple songs with Buddy Guy and also Double Trouble. He played one or two SRV songs and talked about how big of a fan he was of him. When he's not doing songs like "Your body is a wonderland" he is actually a decent guitar player and has earned a bit of respect from me.
