Basically to figure out a chord progression, you'd naturally look at the chords first.
After you take a nice good look at the chords, harmonize them!

Eg) Chord progression: Dmin, GMaj, CMaj
Harmonized progression:
Quality-> I ii iii IV V vi vii
Scale -> C D E F G A B
&
Root of chords
(stacked 3rds)

Thus, that chord progression would be called a ii-V-I progression in the key signature of C MAJOR.
Formula: This is a [Roman Numerals of chords represented] progression in the key of [insert harmonized scale here]

There are great lessons here that deal with intervals and harmony. Once you harmonize the chords, you should see a lot more sense in the progression and then will also be able to transpose those chords over to a different key signature, or you can use the harmonized scale to solo over the entire progression.

If you want to learn chord progressions, I would suggest starting with the basic 7 bar blues stuff, known as "I IV V" or one, four, five. In other words, use for example an A chord, then a D chord, then an A, then a E A being ONE(first note of the scale the chords are built on) D(fourth note of the scale) and E(fifth note of the scale) then you can start learning to toss in other chords.
