Hey,

Anybody know of some cool solos I can learn? I'm trying to expand my "repertoire" right now... But don't know anything fun to learn... Any ideas on some of your favorites?

Here are two different solos that you may have not worked on.

The solo in "Easy" by The Commodores.

Yeah, it is a fairly simple solo but there are bends and slides that take attention to timing to get just right.

The solo in "Midnight at the Oasis" by Maria Muldaur

The guitarist's name is Amos Garret. Most folks have never heard of him, long story how I did. Anyway, this solo is MUCH more difficult than it sounds like at the beginning.

So, something different to keep things fresh.

I don't know your skill level,
but here are some great all time solos.

"Rubina" by on the CD "Not of the Earth" by Joe Satriani. (Voted best Guitar solo ever by guitar magizine some years back.

"Always with you always with me" On "Surfing with the Alien" Joe Satriani. Another extremely tastefull and technical solo. But easy to master.

"Kid Charlamagne" on some album and greatest hits albums by Steely Dan. One of the best solos every put to tape. Awesome to play, great chops and phrasing. A must know for any guitar player. Learn the main solo and the outro solo.

"Hotel California" by the Eagles.
Another classic that is great to have in your Rep. Again, this one is tasty and technical with exception phrasing.

"Sultans of Swing" by.....crap I am drawing a blank on their name. Someone help me out here. Another great solo. exception technique and phrasing.

All of the above solos are intermediate in difficulty. None of em are shred solos. They are all tasty and sweet. Some use a lot of arpeggios and very cool modal shifts.

At least listen to em to appreciate them.
If they are above your level, try them out and see how good you can do. And just play the parts you can and fudge the parts you can't until you get better. As you get better keep filling in the blanks.

If you need the tab, I am sure I can find it and send you a link. They are all tabbed out all over the internet.

Good luck.

Great. http://www.zentao.com/ubb/smilies/smile.gif Thanks everybody. I know of some different tab sites I could look up these, but most tab on the Internet doesn't have time signatures or recordings with them... would they be in sheet music at my local Guitar Center or something?

Best thing is to get Guitar Pro. It is software that plays the tab in midi. You and can also right your own. There is another one that is totally free.. it is called powertab. DL one of them.. It will help you. www.Download.com (http://www.Download.com) should have them.

Jimi Hendrix, 'all along the watchtower' has some sweet licks in it.
Another song which i have always wanted to learn is 'Bird of Paradise' by Snowy White.
Anyone know where I can find the tab?
Cheers

I don't mean to criticise anyone here, but if the guy is looking for solos in the first place, maybe it means he'd like something relaxed, or easy to play at least.
i mean, the other responders let it rip with solos from the all time time top ten guitarist list (Hendrix, Satriani, Van Halen).
If the original poster can handle it, fine, but what about just plain ideas and phrases?
Like:

A-15-16-17
D----------15-16-17
G-------------------15-16-17
B----------------------------15-16-17
e------------------------------------15-16-17

This is stolen from a Doors solo, but if you play it fast enough, it sounds quite cool, because you're zooming from low frequency to high frequency in no time, and for the unsuspecting listener it can act as quite a jolt. Try it.
By the way, out of the proposed solos, No Quarter seems to fit the bill, although probably the live version is funkier, however much you can say that about Jimmy Page.

If you really want to learn some great guitar licks and not want to spend all day figuring out 500 notes per second, find some old MOUNTAIN albums and see if you can figure out some Leslie West stuff, he had the coolest style of anyone ever, and very melodic. Flowers of Evil is a good CD to start with if you can find it.

I do agree on the Leslie West/Mountain solos. "Mississipi Queen" is clever usage of a 12 bar blues in E where you just slide into each chord from below and has a simple yet awesome lead. Also "Strange Brew" from Clapton/Cream is a good early solo. That song is also based on a basic 12 bar in A. Uses all minor pentatonic (5 note) pattern licks that still sound good today.

Achilles Last Stand - Led Zep off the Presence album. This isn't one of Page's billion notes per second deals. Its also one his favourite Zep solos, and mine. Available at fretplay.com

I can respond with references,as to what to look for. I dont know your taste so I'll try to mix it up.

Some easiers bluesy stuff first:
1. Too Rolling Stoned by Robin Trower
2. Peace Pipe by Cry Of Love

This stuff gets intense:
1.For The Love Of God by Steve Vai
2. Race With The Devil On Spanish Highway by Al DiMeola

Some more older tunes:
1.Highway Star by Deep Purple
2.Reelin In The Years by Steely Dan
3.Dirty Women by Black Sabbath

You can find most of this stuff tabbed out on the net....good luck.

The solo in Jethro Tull's Aqualung is a nice, easy pentatonic exercise. It'll show you how to slide along a string as you change positions, which is an easy technique and adds quality to the solo.

The intro solo on Steely Dan's Don't Take Me Alive is a great bending exercise. Its prety tough to learn-it took me an evening to get it.

I agree with the Leslie west stuff. He was an amazing player with great feel. Any old ZZtop stuff is a blast too play and very challenging to get Billy Gibbon's phrasing down. As far as Zep, "since I been loving you" has got a fun solo.

a good song to learn is

Weezer - Say It Aint SO

exellent solo, no shredding or ne of that stuff, jus an extremely emotive an simple solo.

Actually alot of weezer's stuff has some nice easy but affective solos, like Island In The Sun.

and perhaps...Radiohead - Paranoid Android

i learnt this ages ago, an i love playin it, exellent song with some interesting guitar.

theres a very nice solo in i think... crap... its in one of the Nine Inch Nails songs from downward spiril... but also, pink floyd solos are always nice, comfortably numb is easy and a nice one... some metallica ones sound good, and theyre real fast, any good solo is from an older band, what sucks bout new music is the lack of good solos

Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild

"My Sweet Baby" -- Delbert McClinton from "The Jealous Kind" totally kicking roadhouse R&B solo. Very happy.
