Man i have this problem, there's a lot of song i think are MASTERPIECES, but to the public opinion those are just good songs, or sometimes even fillers!!!

Il give a short list:

Scorpions - Sails Of Charon : this song has everything a good song needs IMO, amazing riffs, melodies, vocals and tone!! Im currently in love with this song, Uli Jon Roth here shows how talented and creative his playing is

Deep Purple - Burn and Child In Time : i just think people dont give this 2 too much credit, i think this are better than Highway Star and Smoke...well maybe not Highway but better than Smoke IMO!

Dokken - The Hunter : love the lyrics, the riff, the melodies...i think people dont know this song..

Well thats it for now, i have LOTS more but i want to see which ones you consider masterpieces, ill post more later:)

+100 on Child In Time, definitely a masterpiece...it makes me so mad when I hear the cut version.

I'll probably only list songs that most people consider masterpieces but anyway,

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms...definitely a masterpiece. I absolutely love everything, the tone, the vocals, the dynamics of Knopfler's playing it's tough to beat.

Pantera - Cemetery Gates, it's just brilliant.

Master Of Puppets - I'm fairly sure this song is self explanatory.

Revelation (Mother Earth) - Ohhh Randy and Ozzy...some of the best stuff ever written.

Fallen Down by Gov't Mule - I think this song is Warren Haynes' ultimate piece of songwriting...it's just fantastic.

Why do they always end up being ballads? well, mostly...haha

+1 on Cemetary Gates, I think Flood by Pantera should be up there too :)

A LOT of Leonard Cohen songs I think are amazing and don't get as much credit as they deserve.

The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys by Traffic.

'Rudy' and 'School' to name but two Supertramp masterpieces.

Any Danny Elfman song, but especially 'This Is Halloween' from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack and 'Ice Dance' from the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack.

As far as pop from the 60's I can't think of a better song than "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks. I don't even like the Kinks very much but that's a really good song.
As far as masterpieces go (in non-important order)
Masterpiece-Dylan
The Horse/Silent in the Morning-Phish
Human Nature-Michael Jackson (for real!)
...and Priesty reminded me of my first album "Brothers in Arms" but I'm going with;
The Man's too Strong-Dire Straits

Definately. I just listened to that tune this morning. AMAZING

I absolutely love that song. FANTASTIC riffs, love his tone in the solo, great to sing along to, just a flat out beautiful song. love the regee mix into it too. and the little piano break.

+1 for Hammer to Fall. It never gets the credit it should for being a true rock anthem.

most truly great queen songs really dont. made a thread a while ago, and tons of people agree that queens best work was undoubtly the rock anthems, like Hammer To Fall, One Vision, Now Im Here, just love them all. and Hammer to Fall is a blast to play. not hard at all, but just a great riff. not much fits the definition of "Rock Anthem" better.

I read somewhere that the riff was copied from Megadeth's Hangar 18 (which is a TRUE MASTERPIECE!!)

Oh well just realized...The call of Ktulu was written by Mustaine and was released with Metallica first...but i think Hangar 18 is better listen to it!!!
