No, not those kinds of babies. My new rats. I'm sure you all are familiar with 2 earlier threads about the deaths of my last pair. Well, one year later I got 2 more. I adopted them from the local shelter. They were part of an unplanned litter. A mom got 2 rats for her daughter and they were told that they were both females. Well, next thing they had a litter of babies. They gave them all to the shelter at 10 weeks old. These are the youngest rats I've ever had and it's a learning experience. My last pair were a year old when I got them. Being little boys they do a lot of fighting and squabbling but nothing serious. Their names are Smeagol and Smaug. Here's some pictures.
Meet Smaug:

And meet Smeagol:

As you may have noticed, Smeagol is missing his front left leg. It's a birth defect and when I saw him, I knew his chances of being adopted were slim so I had to give him a chance. But I honestly don't think he even realizes that he only has 3 legs. He can zoom around as fast as his brother. And they're so great together.

Congrats and good luck. I'd say those are two lucky rats.
I guess for me the biggest surprise is that there are shelters for rats

Here in Boston we call 'em Taco Bell.
But seriously, that's cool Iris. I had a roommate who had rats. They make awesome pets, clearly the superior rodent species. Good of you takin' the disabled one there too.

If I just showed my wife those pics she'd start screaming. She is positively terrified of rats. I guess there will be no pet rats in my future, even though I think they're way cool.

Well, the shelter is for all animals but they have an area for rodents and other small animals. They have bunnies, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters you name it. They also have the occasional snake and lizard. I used to volunteer there. But they never had a Spider, thank god.

:hands: I was waiting to see how long it would take someone to get the referance.
Anyway, thanks for the well wishes everyone. I hope they live a long time, in rats years anyway.

Does that mean you don't want to see pictures of my tarantulas?

I got the hobbit/LOTR reference when I saw Smaug, I was like "Oh, what did she name the other one, sauron??"
I really like rats though. Taste delicious.
And for those who didn't know, in the Hobbit(prequel to Lord of the Rings) there was a dragon named Smaug.

GuitarOwnzU-That was seriously uncool. How could you possibly get from my post that I would want to see your ******* spiders. Unless you can't read smileys. What the **** is your problem? How about learning some respect for other peoples feelings.
But aside from GuitarOwnzU acting like an ***, thanks again for the well wishes. They had their first swim in my bathtub today and they had a great time. I gave them a bunch of floating stuff to play with. They were so cute.

I don't think so. A dislike of spiders is one thing. A terrifying phobia is a completely different thing. It just wasn't cool.

:(
I'm just kidding. That's one of the main reasons I don't have a snake. I would feel really guilty owning a snake and then buying frozen or live rats to feed him. Seems a bit hypocritical. ;) The other reason is that my mom told me that if I did get a snake she would never come visit me. In this case, mom wins.
