I just got my POD X3. And while I'm enjoying it through headphones, I have a couple of problems.
1. What should I use to record in conjunction with the POD? I tried Audacity but it sounded quite awful, is there some free software Line 6 have out that is designed to use with the POD or something?
2. How do I create my own presets? Stupid question but dang this POD business is COMPLEX!

Audacity works good for me too Strats. I prefer N-track though for editing and contouring.
Did you load the Line6 Monkey software and grab updates?. If not, you should do this before doing any kind of recording. You will need to have the POD plugged into the USB port and turned on before getting all the purks. Use the USB to record and in Audacity, go to Edit>preferences>Audio I/O be sure that your POD is being used as the medium for recording and playback. If you prefer to have the playback out of your speakers instead of headphones, hit the dropdown tag and set it for whatever your sound card is.
Creating your presets:
I would read the manual for that bud. Take some time to really go over it.

I also use my XT live with Audacity and it sounds great. +1 to Keiths advice.

I did read the manual, so I have all the updates and everything, just when it gets into Audacity there's all this unwanted noise and whatever I play comes out of the speakers delayed.
And another thing, where can I get backing tracks to load into Audacity for free?

I use Mackie Tracktion 3 for recording. However, recording is recording when it comes to what comes out of the Pod.
As far as noise goes, not being smart, but do you have your noise gate set correctly? When you mention a delay in what comes out of your PC speakers, that's COMPLETELY normal. There's always going to be some delay. When I recorded with my Pod, I monitored through headphones so there was no confusion.
