View Full Version : Replacing Pickups

Hey guys, just want to ask about replacing the pickups on my telecaster. It is a 72 Custom, with a single bridge and a neck humbucker. I already purchased the pickups from guitarfetish.com. The bridge pickup i bought is a hotrail and is considered a humbucker, and i've been doing research and I've concluded that i pretty much need to get a 500k pot to replace the existing 250k. I have no experience in soldering or anything, and I really want to learn to do this and i think the only way to learn is to dive right into it. Now is there any way i can ruin this stuff by just making connections and what not, (hypothetically speaking if i made the wrong connections). I have all the wiring diagrams that came with the pickups, so just follow the directions and i should be fine...other than the soldering right?

making wrong connections (putting wire a in place B and wire b in place A) shouldnt do any harm, but if you do it wrong it will either
1. not make any sound
2. sound like crap
but soldering can cause problems. you can destroy pots by heating them too much for too long, and you can mess up pickup magnets/wiring by holding a hot soldering iron close to the pickups for too long too.

a 72 tele......
is that like a made in 1972 Fender Telecaster or a squier re-issue?
if it's a re-issue, then go ahead the GFS pups will be an improvement. plan it all well & don't heat anything too long as the wise Badger suggests.
if it IS a 72 Fender........
GFS aren't an upgrade, (even though I LOVE thier pups and have just ordered $180 worth of gear from them this evening)
