OK- for fun I thought I'd make a list of what I see as the 10 most commonly-repeating themes for song.
My list (in no particular order):
1. I love her and she loves me- it's great.
2. I love her and she does not love me- it's horrible.
3. I love her and she used to love me but she wised up and dumped me- it's horrible.
4. Song about a particular place/region/country I love.
5. Song remembering my youth.
6. Weird trippy druggy songs.
7. Songs about partying
8. Soundtracks
9. Thematic songs [concept albums, Classical pieces, etc]
10. Songs about being a musician.
Bonus entry: Humorous novelty songs (think country music).
There a tons more out there. What is your list like????

Songs about events are pretty common, and politicians too.

Songs about events are pretty common, and politicians too.
A broader topic for BOTH of those would be: "tragedies" :p

I think those are all valid, but you forgot "I love her, but I won't tell you if shes a car, a girl or a drug" like Panama, Highway Star or Trampled Underfoot
I look at listing song types differently;
Observational,
Storytelling,
Autobiographical,
Declarative/Anthemic
I think everyones list would fall within those headings- Indeed, they even comingle under themselves.

:LMAO:
i dont think i was supposed to laugh at the topics but if you think of them as song names "i love her she used to love me but she wised up and dumped me its horrible" that is funny or "the weird trippy drug song" you know youd by an album with titles like that for a good chuckle

You forgot some typical youth song themes
I'm really deep but nobody understands me.
I'm great, but my parents and other authority figures are bugging me!
Everyone older than me is dumb and should shut up while I dance!

I laughed.
I can't think of anything. Way to contribute to the thread.
Well, how about songs about "improbable and grotesque mischief"? I also think if you write a song about a highway you're pretty safe.
Yeah, I'm not that great at this. I tried, though, and that's all that matters. I'll be sure to scream that with tearing eyes after the record company rejects me for my would've-been hit single, "Nobody With A Brain Rides The Gravy Train (Without Turkey)."

blues songs are heavily train oriented, mostly in terms of you or your baby taking one.

The train is a metaphor for the passage of time or even the 'hand of fate'. Time/life moving forward- taking away or dropping off something.

I think that really has a lot to do with the westward expansion of our country (USA) and the role trains played in it.
Hopping on a train represented freedom, something black folks in the south didn't have for a long time.
Various modes of transportation are popular song subjects; cars, planes, trains, boats, horses, even "walking".

I hope that the fact that I am a living non-viking Christian guy who is not into torture won't hinder our friendship! :p

Cool list Peeb. :)
Let's see.
1. Angst about anything. It serves the writer well. Unfortunately it sometimes fades after a few royalty checks. Well so I've read, I wouldn't know. The subject doesn't really matter. It's the expression that works. Screaming youthful tirades are usually the best unless you're a Bob Dylan, or someone near that calibur who can be mad and make it interesting in terms of the poetry. I still like a heavy dose of angst but the language has to be fresh. The Eagles new song "Frail Grasp On The Big Picture" comes to mind. Furious, but no screaming in my old ears. Bonus!!
2. Love......falling in, out, giving it, stealing it, throwing it away, making it work, losing it, lying about it, or my favorite....not having the slightest clue about it. Pitfall.... potentialy boring. A bad love song will sink as low as a great one will rise. Tough to get just right.
3. Life....the beauty, the wonder, the grace, the appreciation for it.
4. Death.....yours, theirs, the unknown, the possibilities, the search for grace. The one that brought salvation. Now there's an awesome topic.
5. Kids....nuff said
6. Friends....especially the ones whose girlfriend you bagged. "Layla" comes to mind.
7. th inning stretch..I'm having writers block.
8. Mothers....man if you aint wrote a song about your mamma you should be ashamed.
9. Fathers....ahhh the reverence, the confusion....... the first time he knocked you on you tookis.
10. drum rollllllllllllllllllll President Bush. Why not? Join the party!
Edit....Bonus topic. Well, actually the topic to end all topics.
How could I forget?
11......THE PARTY SONG. Because as we all know, once you've had the perfect party...it pretty much covers everything . ;) "Even" if you quit partying, just one "perfect party"..... and your covered for life. Double bonus!!
Now go write a hit!

I know I write alot of snarky revenge songs, like Bob Dylan or Elvis Costello. Then there's loneliness. And camels.

LOL! These are great. I submit that you can fit the following lyrics into any one of these themes:
"...this feeling deep inside..."
