well my side band appears to have died before it was even born.
i didnt have very high expectations of this band, but it was fun just to get together and play music i REALLY dug.
the bassist and i wanted to gig ASAP,whereas the singer ,drummer, and 2nd guitarist wanted to practice until everything was PERECT before they would even look towards getting gigs.( the singer, drummer and second guitarist had played together for quite awhile before the bassist and i came in) alot of time practice was wasted because of doing tunes we had slated to have down, the bassist and drummer would go off in some weird bizzare direction, and we'd waste valuable time jammming over a tune noone had anty expectation to play live
well the bass player jetted this week saying he wanted a find a group ready to hit the ground running, and the singer is mad, saying she dosent know if she wants to start all over from square one with another bassist
there is a bit of friction between me and the rest of the band as well. they like doing covers note for note like the record, and i really cant be bothered to waste time learining someone else solos note or note. i dont dig it and i will rarely do it,and if i feel i'm being pushed to do it i get even more resistant to the whole idea.
soooooooooooooooo, i'm going to duck out this weekend, get my amp and split while everyone still likes each other

I always thought playing covers note for note was <quack quack> crazy personally. I know if I was at a show, I wouldn't wanna hear a band reproducing the albums, I could stay at home if I wanted to hear the albums. I don't even like it when bands play their OWN songs note for note like it is on the album.

Anyway those fun side-bands are good to have sometimes, as long as you don't expect too much. Too bad it didn't work out though.

Well, seems like not too much is lost..except the singer's hopes and dreams!!! :)

As far as the note for note thing, personally I think alot of familar intros should be as close to the cover as possible. Other than that, if the other leads and solos sound good, then it's fine.

That sums it up for me in that department.

I always thank whoever was involved at the time, if any of the music we played together was good, and fun to play. :) Then, of course, you grab your gear before the knives and guns come out. :D :D

if there are any real stand out 'signature licks' ( think the ending licks of Tush or Train Train) , i'll quote them, and the intros and outros are always pretty close but that's it. its cool though, if everyone liked the same thing life would be BORING

thats where i'm at. the folks are real nice, and i want to leave open ended, i hate burning bridges. who knows, 6 months from now they may know a gigging band needing a guitarist:)

do you have enough time for a side band, scott? (I can't remember if your in a "primary" band right now or not?)

Sorry it didn't work out. Hey, whats your 5 to 10 favorite bands/singers from the 80s?

Hey Scott,

Oh well, prob best that you are getting out while the getting is good. I agree with you on the note for note thing. As long as you have that signature lick, noone else cares besides the anal retentive tyoes. In fact, I think it shows way more talent to do your own thing and have it fit into the song. We dont have a fiddle player and no one has ever complained that "hey, you did that intro to Amarillo by Morning all wrong!" lol.. Dont worry man, you will get some side action before you know it :D

Easy come easy go.
As for the note for note thing.
I think if the guitar player can really hold his /her own and not stink up the room with awefull homemade solos then they should do what they feel.
However nothing is worse than sitting through horrid homemade solos because
the player lacks the skill to improv really well but does anyway because he also lacks the ability to copy well.
I`m not talking about garage bands I`m talking about bar bands where they advertise a band. I pay my cover, I buy food and drinks and now I have to hear some poser butcher the pentatonic scale or leave.
Sorry to rant

Hey, I add a blue note in there every now and again. Now shut up and eat your greasy cheeseburger while I jam!

:riff:

Oh, wait... I don't gig. Nevermind! :D

The second best money I've ever made, per gig, was in a band where we covered the songs note for note. Solos and all. We did our best to get the amps to sound exactly like the album. Basically, when we played, it was like playing the stereo, but with the energy of a live band. Crowds loved it. But that's hard work - really hard. For example: it took me a couple of hours to get the Whipping Post solo down note for note. It's not that hard of a solo, it's just that there really aren't signatures in it (and it's long). Dire Straits stuff, on the other hand, aren't so bad. Harder to play technically, but very memorable.

you're better than i am!
even with Blackmore i still dont have the patience to sit down and learn every thing note for note, and he is my biggest influence.
i'll ususally cop the begining and end of a solo and just jam the rest. i ENJOY not knowing what i'm going to play, and thinking on my feet.
as usual, when one door closes another opens: i joined a band that has one to two bookings a month thru the end of the year, and i hope the guys in Whitebread can fill in some of the gaps as well.

Note for note? I think it depends on the situation and the song. If I were going to do Hotel California, the guitar solo almost has to be copied because it is such an integral part of the song. How many Eagles fans can't sing that solo right along with the music?

Back in my A.F. band days, we copied most things note for note, except for solos which we improvised usually. That is, except where the copied solo was important to the song. The solo from Sweet Child Of Mine...Guns & Roses, comes to mind. That solo was copied note for note because it was important, and hey if you can learn to copy someone else's solos, you end up learning licks you might not have otherwise and you're playing is enhanced.

Just my 2 cents.

You gotta know when to hold 'em,
Know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away,
Know when to run.

HAHAHAHA, yeah best to get out before feelings get hurt and all that. You never know when their new band might need someone to sit in right?

Amen brother. I look at the solos as "me" time; a chance to dip a beloved familiar chip into your own individual salsa, lol. I don't like the idea that every single note I'm gonna play the whole night is pre-determined. Where's the fun in that? It's bad enough people expect you to play the same chords as the original, lol. I think certain solos and lead parts that are REALLY recognizable should contain the signature licks; beyond that have FUN with it. The way I see it, if JIMI didn't wanna play the exact same solo on every live version of "Purple Haze," why the hell should I?
