Where is my speed?

I'm a newbie to guitar. I understand theory quite well and outside of guitar modes, I have my lunchO'lessons covered on that part. My problem lies with speed. I did an experiment and have found that I suck.
I learned a quick (24 single notes at 120bps) solo about 3 weeks ago.
I practice it everytime I tune up, play or even touch my guitar. As of late, I've been learning new chords and progressions but I keep comming back to this solo thinking that I'll nail it. Well, I'm not even close to it. I can play it to the point that I'm adding my own style to it but when I listen to the CD and try to mimic, I'm like SLOW as skite.
I'm playing it in the correct position, I'm relaxing, I'm not trying to concintrate too much but I'm playing it too slow.
Am I keeping myself in this rut?

BTW, this problem is not what george is going through. I can pick pretty fast as I learned how to play wasted years about 10 years ago and I can still play that. My problem is that I'm somehow not able to speed up even though I'm noticing that I'm not having trouble at all playing at the speed I'm playing the solo.
If that makes any sense.

If you want to increase your speed, you have to do it a very little bit at a time. This is where a metronome comes in handy

The trick is to push yourself just to the point where you have to struggle a little to play it perfectly. Practice at that speed until you can do it effortlessly, then speed up just to the struggling point again.

It's like lifting weights. You only add more weight when the current weight doesn't challenge you. If you just pile a bunch of weight on... you'll only end up with very sore muscles and no mass.
