well i play guitar and so does my friend. we want to start a band so we tryed to recruit a bass player and a drummer. Now there are 2 bass players that me and my friend know in our area and theyre both jackholes for their own reasons, so we tried both of them and fired them after 1 practice (each). Then we had a drummer who we fired because hed rather shoot airsoft guns then practice. So we recently recruited a singer who is pretty good for a 13 year old. So we have a singer and 2 guitars. Next it really isnt that hard to find a drumset player so thats pretty easy. but my real question is do really need a bass? thanks

depends what you wanna play, The Black Keys for instance have no bass on any of their songs

same with the yeah yeah yeahs, and the white stripes of course. I think its usefull have a bassplayer though. bass adds to the music more than you'd think.

or you could always just get a bass and a bass amp and then you and the other guitarist could switch playing bass for a song until you ofound a bass player.

A good rhythm section can really help a band lock into what they're supposed to be doing, tempo and rhythm wise. I've played guitar, bass, and drums in my time, and I need that low end drum/bass combo to lock into.
I would do as someone else suggested - one of you play bass while the other plays guitar. You can always switch if one of you is better in a particular style of playing. Also, you'll have that much more experience and practice in different ways of playing and thinking, which always helps.

You need a bass player to secure the beat and round out the bottom end of a tune.Without it,(pardon the pun) the bottom drops out. If you can get an Octovator pedal, you can use that with guitar for added richness, or you can play it clean and play bass lines with it.

holy crap... well this week was awesome, we got a bass player whos like one of those gay jocks but he hangs with us sometimes, and he plays bass and hes real good. So we went to my house to chill a little and played a bit and were doing great! Were gonna have full band practice on friday, the school talent show is in march. Were planning on going cuz we can actually play a whole song. So were ready, and advice on playing live?
