So, anybody willing to do a vid on vibrato technique?? Id be interested in vibrato and "bent" vibrato,
I'm SLOWLY getting better at regular vibrato, but it always helps to see it, at least for me.
And my bending vibrato .....um, well.....lets just say it needs help!!

Cool video. Thanks for posting that.
One of my instructors described it as turning a door knob and using your arm for the turn sorta like one of your tips in the video.

If this didn't answer any of your questions ANGRY PYGMY, maybe ask a few more and I'll see if I can supplement or clarify anything.

Just downloaded(took a while-dial-up) and watched twice, AWESOME...but I do have a few questions....
Standard vibrato....I notice(i think) that you back up your vibrato fretting finger....is this normal for most players???? I assume it is. I think part of my problem is Ive been trying to do it with a single finger..seems like my single finger technique may be part of the problem
I have been using the wrist twist/arm technique, but although Ive been getting alot of movement..very little of it has been transferred to my single finger.
and, Do you have a preferred direction for vibrato?? Obviously, low E, and high E can only go in one direction..but for the other strings, is one better than the other?(im guessing no)

Ya, it also depends on your finger strength and string gauge. Depending on where I am in a phrase, I'll use just my index...or I'll back it up with my middle and ring even...I use 2-3 fingers always on bend vibrato.
I use 9's...so I don't need to exert a lot of strength to bend the string, but with something like 10 or 11...you definately want the extra power. I'd even recommend working on using 1...2..3..and 4 fingers for the vibrato. This way you can do vibrato on any note in a phrase without having to reposition your hand.

Honestly, it's not an intuitive process for me anymore, I just tend to do what works. However, in my experience, pushing towards the sky, rather than the ground, gives you a bit more control. When I do vibrato with just my first finger, I tend to do it the other way...so really, it's about what you think works best for you. I'd experiment with both so you can effectively use the technique on any string, though.

Thanks for clearing that up, Fendershredder....I think Ive got alot to work on now. Ill probably have more questions as i practice this stuff.
One thing...that classical vibrato. I have little interest in that for everyday playing, but I found that to be cool as hell, but i dont understand the technique.
HOW do you "pull the string" back toward the nut???Care to expand on that a little...if only for my own curiosity

Sure. So, if you have a note fretted you simply try to pull the string on a horizantal plane towards the nut, then towards the bridge. You won't feel like you're physically pulling it, because it's tight, but the effect will change the pitch slightly. Really try to pull the string in either direction though. If you pull it towards the bridge you're basically slackening the string from where you have it fretted to the bridge- making it flat. And as you pull it towards the nut you're tightening it more, making it sharper.

There's also a video that I made in this section on how to build the technique once you've learned how to do it. Using the method I describe in my vid I managed to learn the technique in only a few days of practising. The video sound is crap and a little out of sync but the principle is really effective.

Fendershredder - nice video, thoughtful coverage of technique etc.
Here's (http://www.guitar-tube.com/watch/paul-gilbert-vibrato-string-bending-guitar-lesson.html) my favourite vibrato lesson ... somewhat complements Fendershredder's, bit of a different vibe (:rolleye:) about it...
