I was thinking about Van Halen and how Eddie influenced the sound of countless guitarists, how VH dominated the 80's and early 90's. But now, I'm not so sure about them. They were so shallow, totally ruled by Ed's flashy style and Roth's obsession with sex. What bands do you think will transcend the ages and perhaps be viewed as true originals a century from now?

I think that the big ones will always have a place in history. The Dead, Jimi, Floyd, Beatles.

Newer artists.. Phish, Metallica... drawing a blank on any others... maybe Pearl Jam?

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure the debate regarding John Mayer will still be raging on.

One thing we have to remember is that the whole "band" style of music, ie, music that isn't written by a composer for an orchestra to play, has only been happening for less than a century. So, who will be important? Who knows? While I'd say some bands like the Beatles, Elvis, etc. will never lose their draw, the way music is produced and sold currently hasn't been going on long enough for anyone to really give an accurate prediction. On top of that, we don't know what the mindsets of people a hundred years from now will be either, so at this point its one big shot in the dark.

Frank Zappa.

Dragonforce. Except they'll be Mecha-Dragonforce. And they'll be engaged in a giant three-way battle with Mothra and Godzilla in Tokyo.

With all the new technology available in 2109, their music will be charged with unfathomable studio enhancements, even Mothra and Godzilla will have a hard time with them.

As far as modern bands go, I think one day Clutch will get their due. They are an incredible band and have consistently put out great albums. They are just in between everything genre wise though and have more of a cult popularity than a mainstream one.

I think Cake are also a great band, who again have consistently put out albums.

To compare some of these modern bands to classic bands, I think a key point is how much material they produce. We are in an age again of one hit/one album wonders. The reason bands like Zeppelin, Floyd, Stones, Beatles were amazing is because they released a massive library of great music. A lot of bands nowadays can't even fill an entire album without it having filler.

DUH!! Led Zeppelin!!! Thank you Squizz...I can't believe that many posts went down before you said that...

And "tdu" - I LOVE Clutch. They are WAY under-appreciated!

Please tell me you're joking about Cake. That's like saying the Bloodhound Gang is going to matter 50 years from now.

Have you heard every Cake album? They are a very talented band and every album they have put out has been strong. What exactly is your basis for comparing them to Bloodhound Gang? Are you basing your opinion on a few singles you have heard, or the band itself?

If you feel the need to knock someone else's taste in the thread, at least back it up.

Better yet post the band's YOU like and don't be a jerk to other people for posting the bands they like.

Uh, since when did I knock your taste? I couldn't care less if you listen to Britney Spears.

Better yet, if you feel the need to jump to conclusions, don't be a jerk to other people and read their post first.

And yes, I've heard plenty of Cake albums. In fact, I've heard too many of them and I'd like to have those moments of my life back.

You managed to either not read, not comprehend, or misinterpret two things in this thread; the subject of this thread itself, and my post.

This thread is about bands that we think will be "legends" down the road, not about bands we like. I don't like Elvis and I don't like Nirvana, yet I think they will always be remembered. In the grand scheme of things, I couldn't care less if they're remembered or not. I'll still like the bands I like and they'll be remembered by me.

Sorry to rain on your slice of Cake. :rolleye:

The thread is based on people's opinions. You don't see anyone else in the thread questioning what other people have chose band wise. You are the only one who thinks they need to make a rude comment. So yes, you are a jerk, and you are singling out posts. So get off your high horse. I hate to tell you, but you are not as witty as you seem to think you are.

maybe Pearl Jam?

I doubt it. They'll sadly be forgotten, and Nirvana will be the only grunge band that gets remembered.

Oasis will go down in history as being the biggest britpop/indie band.

I never questioned why anyone chose who they did for the list, so once again, you missed the ship. I believe this was strike 3, and you're out.

Now, go find something to keep you occupied other than starting internet fights. Perhaps a game of Pokemon with your fellow preschool friends will help you to cool your jets.

We're done here.
