You should try Cubase, I like it a lot, but I don't know if it's better than Cool Edit, that's up to you..

I use this version: http://www.steinberg.net/ProductPage_sb.asp?Product_ID=2014&Langue_ID=7

I use Acid Xpress version 3.0. It was free from www.download.com, and works fine for me. Make sure you search for "Acid Xpress," and don't get version 4.0; it has some things blocked out that are only available in the full version :hmmm:. I use a little hack to be able to convert the mixed .wav files into an .mp3 infinitely, whereas the program only allows 20 conversions.

I use Audacity too, but it's not the best. I just use it 'cause it's the best free one. The best one I've tried is Samplitude. It runs about $300. You can download a demo from them, I forget the link so just do a google search for it if you think you might be interested.

I have used everything from CoolEdit, Adobe Audition (same thing), Cakewalk 9.0, Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.0, Cubase SX, Guitar Tracks 4, and a few others.

Sonar3 by cakewalk is (imo) the best program of its type I have yet tried.

Basically I only need two diff programs now. I use Sonar3 for the multitracking and recording, and SoundForge 7 for induvidual track editing. Between those two programs I can do pretty much everything I need to do.

Yea Cool Edit does what all of the above programs do, maybe more, and its really easy to use. If you know what you are doing you can get it for free :)

I just downloaded audacity and its amazing! It has so many professional features on it. I have started producing my own music on it, sort of experimental guitar jazz stuff. I will put it on soundclick.com soon.

I ran into some free money that I want to spent on either ACID Music Studio 5 or Soundforge Audi Studio 7. Any pros/cons for either program?

Also, what kind of other equipment will I need? Mic, special cables?

Acid is not good for recording.. its a cool soft for mixing or to work with samples.. ei more for DJs and Producers. I find Cubase SX2 is pretty easy once u learned the basics, it has everything you can possibly need

Well start with a good audio card.. I use Delta 66 with a Omni I/O interface.. works for me.. but you got to figure out what you suits your needs. RAM is very important too especially if you are using samplers. (1GB only sounds alot)

Its an awesome peice of equipment for home studio PC based recording.

Its a bit pricy, but covers any, and all, the bases.

I have used everything from CoolEdit, Adobe Audition (same thing), Cakewalk 9.0, Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.0, Cubase SX, Guitar Tracks 4, and a few others.

I want to do scoring as well as audio and midi. Do you know if any of those do it? I know Cubase SL does.
