ok so i listen and play a lot of metal like Parkway Drive or August Burns Red... Hardcore type of stuff... now i play in an original band but heres my problem...

i write some great metal chord progressions and i know the jist of how to get all the chords in line but i have a problem writing leads over the top now what sort of theory do i need to learn to be able to do this?? what should i learn that will help me write metal leads? i know my penatonic scales but that just isnt this kind of metal so any help would be greatly greatly appreciated...

If you don't know how to play the pentatonic scales all over the fretboard, first concentrate on that. Most people only know the first pattern and expect to get by on just that. But there are actually five different patterns that span over the fretboard. Once you learn that, you will be able to figure out alot of blues/rock songs.

Once you get that down, i would concentrate on learning your minor scales over the fretboard. Alot of metal uses minor scales for that dark sound. Good luck!

After you've done that the next thing you need to do is learn other people's solos.

The scales are like learning the alphabet or words or something.

Next you need to learn how to talk, put sentences together. Take a solo you like, one that challenges you technically. Learn it. Find a live version, where there are some differences. Learn that version. The mix the two versions. Then extend. Hey! Suddenly you're creating...
