Typically, I don't post words in here. I'm not a fan reading song words without the context of the song. My creative process is so convoluted that, if I'm in writing phase, I can't look at other peoples words at all because I can easily fall off track often times.

HOWEVER, I hammered one out yesterday, and I'm actually excited about it. I'm often excited about the ones that happen fast, and it's been a while for me since I've had one (Nordic Pharaoh was the last, Plastic Life before that). So I wanted to share. AND, in order to keep it 'fun', after I post the words here, I'll even post a demo of it in Showcase after I finish working it a little bit (later today, tomorrow latest).
I would imagine that to make it more interesting for you all, so even if you don't end up liking the song itself, at least the process may prove entertaining for you.

About the song;
I think Broken Boy Soldiers is one of the best songs written in the past 10 years. Jack White spills himself in that song, and is so 'culpable'. I don't hear a lot of songs that say 'I'm not a good person'. Especially non-apologetic ones. Though, like Criminal (Fiona Apple), there IS a desire for redemption. But no apology.
I WISH I could have written EITHER of those songs. Or even a song LIKE that. I did manage to touch on it a little with Nordic Pharaoh, but without much of the 'finesse' that draws me to the above mentioned examples.

This song, I believe, comes MUCH closer. Granted, still not on par with Mr White or Ms Apple, but I'm largely pretty happy with it.

Last week, I found the riff. Then the first line. Yesterday, I spent some time on it and it poured out. It wasn't 'effortless', certainly, but it wasn't 'forced'. I think, with some polish, it may prove to be a pretty solid song.

I don't know that I like the title, so that'll just be the Jam Session 'working title'. There are some word usage issues (a few more iterations of a couple words that I'd rather avoid, for one), and I may wind up moving a couple lines around.
But have a look anyway;

Legacy of Dust

Fending through the dust I find
A sentence worth re-reading
Chipping ‘way the rust of time
Left me un-grieving
Only after time it dawned
It’s not what you were seeing
Dunno why it took so long
To catch the meaning

(chorus)
I never knew I steered you wrong
Finally I see after so long
It’s not the legacy I’d choose to leave for you and me

Just east of mean

Combing through the vaults of mind
Discovering dark shadows
Of the hollow words of mine
That left you tattered
As I turn to moving on
My shadow leaves it hotter
Shattered soul a dying lawn
Just craving water

(chorus)

Less and less of us to find
As memory’s repeating
Guess I never read the sign
Too busy blinking
After all this moving on
No legacy worth leaving
Dunno why it took so long

Hit me with your critiquing sticks,
