So I might be a bit late on hearing about this guy, but has anyone heard of/seen Andy McKee? A friend showed me his Drifting video last night and it kind of blew my mind. I wonder how long it takes to get to that point. I'm pretty sure I still have a long way to go. If you haven't seen him play, give this a look:
YouTube - andymckee's Channel (http://www.youtube.com/andymckee)
Does anyone else on here know much about this style of playing? How much time and discipline would this take?

Andy McKee is awesome! There's a few people using similar techniques. You might also want to check out Erik Mongrain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbndgwfG22k I think the trick is to try to be original, think out of the box, and to understand that you have a whole bunch of new techniques to learn! A good starting place would be to just start messing arround with some open tunings.

Saw him live supporting Tommy Emmanuel a while back.
he uses a LOT of tunings.
like EVERY tune he has a different tuning for.
Drifting was written so that it's played with the left hand over the neck all the way through.
some pieces are more musical than others, but he is a very gifted player.

It all starts with knowing where the notes are on the fretboard. And then, just learning to play the basslines with your right hand and making up nice melodies with your right hand. then once you get that down, you can work on adding in drums noices between notes that fit the timing.
Makes it sound so easy, but it's so hard!
I like how Antoine Dufour does it a bit more in some cases. Their all good though! Check out "Candyrat" on youtube, it's the channel for all these amazing guitarists.

Andy Mckee is brilliant. Truly a legend in my eyes when it comes to playing Acoustic. Make sure to check out Andrew White, he's another songwriter signed by Candyrat.
