I don't write a lot of stuff, but this is the first song I wrote that we actually recorded. If I can find a digital version of it, I'll post it up.
Poor old Sammy Smith, from back in '39
Was workin' on a job at the Down Home Railway Line
A security inspector, just a-keepin' down the crime
'Til they caught him in a boxcar with a bottle of red wine
Now Sammy got his papers, and they showed him to the door
The boss kid said "We don't need your experience here no more"
He got a nice gold watch, but he sold it at the store
"What the hell is time to me, when I'm pushin'74?"
chorus
Now Junior's got his daddy's job, and gee, he's doin' swell
He bought a big computer, and a bright red Porsche as well
He don't go to the railway yard 'cause he doesn't like the smell
As long as he's got dough for blow, the rest can go to hell
"That little snot nosed boss kid, he thinks that I'm a joke
He's up there in his office with his buddies snortin' coke
With lots of pretty women just a-waitin' for a poke
And all I've git's this jug of red, and now I'm feelin' broke"
"For 30 odd long years, I've been doing what I'm told
And get fired by that little s*** just because I'm gettin' old
If his daddy were alive now, Junior wouldn't be so bold
Hell, I'd hang myself tonight, but my rafters wouldn't hold
bridge
Now, Junior's daddy built this railroad right up from the floor
He gave it all to Junior when he knocked upon death's door
Junior said "About damn time, I couldn't wait much more
Now I'm goin' out to buy some coke and to rent myself a whore
Yes, I'm goin' off to party. Cousin Bill can mind the store"
So Sammy staggered homeward, just a-cursin' at the rain
Who could blame that fella if he went just a bit insane
Knowin' that his 50 years of service were in vain
Was it really a mistake when he got run down by that train?
