My 2 cents....

Guitar into Toneport UX-1 and into your PC. Record using Audacity. That'll get you going and cost $100 or less.

Variables....if you'll ever need phantom power for a condenser mic, get the UX-2.

....connecting the UX-1 or 2 to your soundcard will require a few cheap RCA to 1/8" cables and 1/4" to RCA adapters.

....making the UX-1 your default soundcard is the way to go. It frees up the headphone jack and allows for seperate monitors but requires a bit of messing around with settings. The line inputs go to the soundcard and the analog outs go to the monitors.

If you can make the toneport your soundcard it will work in garage band i have used my digi 002 in garage band so any interface you can make your soundcard will work
